《大决战》讲述的是1947年蒋介石撕毁和平协议，对解放区发动全面进攻，华东野战军在苏北和山东解放区与国民党74师展开一场殊死搏杀，在山东根据地人民群众的支援下，终于攻下了孟良崮，消灭了74师的故事。1946年冬天，国民党发动的内战处于最激烈的阶段，蒋介石军队大规模进攻华东解放区。人民解放军沈振新军与蒋军王牌部队整编74师在苏北涟水城发生了激烈的交战。为保存实力，我军主动北撤。但敌军非常猖狂，又联合83师，组成20万人的部队进犯山东沂蒙山区，妄图将我军主力击溃。但我军战士士气鼓舞、骁勇顽强，在47年冬爆发的莱芜战役中重创了74师。但在战斗中，连长石东根一时大意，中了敌人假投降的奸计，使部队受到了不必要的损失，而战斗结束后，他又陶醉于胜利，骄傲自满。军长沈振新对他进行了批评教育，使他认识到了自己的错误，并积极改正。在随后的孟良崮战役中，他有勇有谋，带领战士搭出人梯，登上了悬崖峭壁，捣毁了敌军指挥所，并击毙敌军师长，全歼74师，取得了最后胜利
