《大決戰》講述的是1947年蔣介石撕毀和平協議，對解放區發動全面進攻，華東野戰軍在蘇北和山東解放區與國民黨74師展開壹場殊死搏殺，在山東根據地人民群眾的支援下，終於攻下了孟良崮，消滅了74師的故事。1946年冬天，國民黨發動的內戰處於最激烈的階段，蔣介石軍隊大規模進攻華東解放區。人民解放軍沈振新軍與蔣軍王牌部隊整編74師在蘇北漣水城發生了激烈的交戰。為保存實力，我軍主動北撤。但敵軍非常猖狂，又聯合83師，組成20萬人的部隊進犯山東沂蒙山區，妄圖將我軍主力擊潰。但我軍戰士士氣鼓舞、驍勇頑強，在47年冬爆發的萊蕪戰役中重創了74師。但在戰斗中，連長石東根壹時大意，中了敵人假投降的奸計，使部隊受到了不必要的損失，而戰斗結束後，他又陶醉於勝利，驕傲自滿。軍長沈振新對他進行了批評教育，使他認識到了自己的錯誤，並積極改正。在隨後的孟良崮戰役中，他有勇有謀，帶領戰士搭出人梯，登上了懸崖峭壁，搗毀了敵軍指揮所，並擊斃敵軍師長，全殲74師，取得了最後勝利
