Often, I have been asked to give advice to friends preparing for job interviews. The line I have used most often is: "Be yourself!"
Everyone has his/her view on job interviews. Many Chinese immigrants regard job interviews as an exam, a test or a competition. However, there is another aspect of the job interview, which is often forgotten: a job interview is not only an opportunity for employers to meet with the candidate and examine his/her fit with the job position, equally important, it is an opportunity for the candidate to inspect the employer, the job responsibilities and prospective colleagues, and to find out if it would be a suitable job for him/her. The latter are easily forgotten or ignored, especially when the job market is slow and candidate is in a "take any job" mood.
When friends turn to me for advice, I always suggest that they look at the job opportunity from an inspector's point of view. One of them had a strong background and had worked out an eye-catching résumé. However, despite going through dozens of interviews, he did not receive a single offer. We went through an interview rehearsal. Although his resume was very well organized, it did not have an interview version. We worked together on his interview strategy and got his résumé reorganized to form an interview version. He walked into a job interview the next day and got AN offer three days later.
It is very important to be prepared, to be organized and to be confident in a job interview. There are quite a few courses that give you instructions on handling job interviews and there are even workshops to help you develop more confidence in order to clear these hurdles.
Like most other skills, overusing these skills will also blow your opportunity away or land you into an awkward situation -- either getting a job that you don't like, or being unable to get a job that you do like.
In one of my recent hiring experiences, I was really disappointed with one of the candidates who, like me, also originated from China. The man had obtained a graduate degree in Canada and had extensive working experience in the US. Because of the tight hiring schedule, I was ready to say "welcome aboard" on the spot based on his impressive résumé. Having been working in the US for several years, I expected him to be able to communicate in English but, surprisingly, his English was very limited. Although English communication is required, I figured that I might be able to help him to fill in the language gap if he had good technical skills. In the technical discussion, we realized that his technical background was quite different than our environment. Furthermore, when he was asked to explain some of the scenarios, he started to talk about something totally irrelevant. I hoped he was merely trying to divert the questions that he could not answer. However, it was really not a smart approach. Interview skills are not tricks. In some of the interview "skills" you might be told to avoid what you don't know and say what you do know, but diverting questions will not make people believe you know the answer, while causing more damage as it makes people think you don't understand the question. Communication is the key in business. As I am looking for someone to work with me, it is acceptable if he does not know the answer but can learn and find the answer while it is not acceptable if he does not even understand the question, fails to ask for clarification and heads in the wrong direction.- 新聞來源於其它媒體,內容不代表本站立場!
